Launch of Moberly Lake Watershed Stewardship Plan

Prepared by Reg C. Whiten, InterraPlan Inc.

After several years of work doing volunteer water sampling, education and demonstration activities with shoreline property owners, the Moberly Lake Community Association is pleased to announce the formal launch of its Watershed Stewardship Planning process in early June. In 2000, Peace River Regional District classified Moberly Lake as a “Development Lake” within the region. As the population grows and industrial resource-use expands, residents have expressed a need for greater input into how the area is developed so that quality-of-life and key environmental values are protected. Other issues like development of a treated water-supply and waste-water treatment are priorities that many property-owners would like to see addressed.

This community-based initiative is being done in partnership with both the West Moberly and Saulteau First Nations with funding provided from the BC Real-Estate Foundation, the Peace River Regional District and other partners. The principal goal of this project is to consider long-term land and water-use within the drainage of Moberly Lake and the Upper Moberly Lake. Under the direction of a local Advisory Committee, land-use planning consultant Reg Whiten, InterraPlan Inc. will guide the public through a series of information-sharing and consultation sessions over the next year. Topics will range from shoreline development, environmentally-sensitive area designation, fisheries and wildlife stewardship, ground- and surface-water protection, recreational lake-use, watershed restoration and forest management. Provincial government agencies like the Ministry of Water Land & Air Protection (Environmental Protection, and Fisheries) have strongly endorsed the project along with other stewardship groups like Ducks Unlimited and the Peace River Watershed Council.  Participation from key resource industry and other resource-users with interests in the watershed will, of course, also be encouraged during the process to ensure interests, and opportunities are fully considered.
